History
Starbucks first opened on March 31, 1971, in Seattle, Washington. It was founded by three students from the University of San Francisco, namely Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker. The three drew inspiration from coffee entrepreneur Alfred Peet, when he taught them his distinct style of roasting coffee beans. The first Starbucks was opened in Seattle, where they started out selling whole roasted coffee beans and not beverages..
Before deciding on the name “Starbucks”, many options were considered. Terry Heckler, Bowker’s partner in his ad agency suggested that words starting with “st” were powerful. And so, they brainstormed many names and finally came to “Starbuck” which was taken from one of Moby Dick’s characters.
